Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Joby Aviation, a pioneer in electric aircraft development, to introduce a new air taxi service in Dubai by early 2026. The landmark initiative, announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, shows the UAE’s commitment to innovative transit solutions.
The six-year agreement grants Joby Aviation the right to operate its cutting-edge air taxis in Dubai, marking the city as a global leader in eco-friendly and efficient air travel.
The RTA’s support extends to financial mechanisms, aiding Joby in establishing and expanding their service in Dubai.
A vision of future mobility
JoeBen Bevirt expressed his enthusiasm about this collaboration, saying it was a privilege to partner with the Dubai government on this initiative.
He stated, “We aim to demonstrate sustainable air travel’s potential globally. This agreement encompasses all essential elements for a successful air taxi service: operational clarity, robust infrastructure, and our high-capacity, long-range aircraft.”
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, RTA’s Director-General, highlighted the air taxi service as part of RTA’s vision to embrace advanced transportation technologies, offering Dubai’s residents and visitors a novel, efficient mobility solution.
The service promises to enhance city connectivity and passenger travel experience.
Strategic partnership with Skyports
Joby will also partner with Skyports to design, build, and operate four initial vertiport sites across Dubai.
Key locations like Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, and Downtown Dubai are selected as the first air taxi service points.
Displayed for the first time in the region at the World Governments Summit, Joby’s electric aircraft can transport a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph.
The aircraft promises a drastic reduction in travel time, like a 10-minute flight from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, compared to 45 minutes by car.

Regulatory compliance and safety assurance
Collaborating closely with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Joby and RTA will ensure regulatory compliance, aligning with FAA standards and local requirements to guarantee safe early operations.
The collaboration extends to various aspects, including customer journey design and integration into Dubai’s broader public transport network.
Joby plans to establish a local operating entity and recruit locally, emphasising regional development.
Following their recent achievements, like their inaugural electric air taxi flight in New York City and the start of production in California, Joby Aviation continues to gain momentum. With over $2 billion in funding, including significant investments from major global players, Joby is poised to redefine urban mobility.
