ENGIE Fabricom automates airline baggage tracking with Zebra Technologies

Logistics executives reveal 2011 company performances
2011 was a difficult year for most local logistics firms.

Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA), an innovator at the edge of the enterprise with solutions and partners that enable businesses to gain a performance edge, today announced that ENGIE Fabricom uses Zebra TC56 mobile computers for automated airline baggage handling to help increase productivity and accuracy.

When Fraport (a holding company linked to Frankfurt airport) acquired 14 Greek island airports, it issued a tender for an automated baggage tracking solution to comply with International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulation which requires airlines to track baggage from check-in to loading and unloading.

Previously, most of the smaller airports did not have a tracking solution. PHI DATA, a Zebra partner, has worked with ENGIE Fabricom for over 15 years and recommended Zebra’s TC56 mobile computers and SOTI MobiControl enterprise mobility management solution. Airport Systems, a department of the Infra division of ENGIE Fabricom, implemented its own cloud-based baggage handling scanning application and integrated it on TC56 mobile computers.

“We chose Zebra’s TC56 mobile computers because they are reliable and purpose built for the enterprise with the ease of a consumer-style smartphone,” said Peter Gheysels, Sales Manager, Infra – Airport Systems, ENGIE Fabricom. “We have equipped 330 TC56 devices with our baggage tracking software application. This helps boost overall efficiency and customer satisfaction by giving a clear, accurate real-time view on what’s been loaded at any time.”

In each of the local Greek airports using this solution, there are nearly 30 mobile computers simultaneously scanning information which is immediately relayed back to a central system that allows real-time monitoring and remote management. A five-year Zebra OneCare support service contract will help ensure business operations continue without interruptions.

“Zebra has worked with our partner, PHI DATA to provide a solution that helps to deliver a performance edge,” said Jan Steenssens, Channel Sales Manager, Belgium, Zebra Technologies. “Our products are designed to meet ENGIE Fabricom’s needs by optimising baggage handling productivity and accuracy, which in turn drives customer satisfaction.”

The solution’s benefits include empowering airport baggage handlers with real-time information to know if there are missing items, and when loading is complete. Passengers also have peace of mind that their luggage has arrived safely on the correct flight.
