It was a warm, pleasant day in Taiwanese city of Tainan. People were going along with their lives in a serene manner, strolling along a sidewalk of a quiet road. Suddenly they were covered with whale guts. And whale blood. And whale - well whatever else comes out of a whale when it explodes.
In 2004, a sperm whale carcass being transported from a beach to a laboratory exploded (literally) filling the street with - well read above. Scientists now know that pressure from gasses built up while a whale decomposes causes it to explode. Logistics firms now know that if a whale is dead, but not in a tin, then it is probably best to leave it alone.
Full disclaimer: We don't know if it was indeed a warm, pleasant day in Tainan. We also don't know if people were strolling serenely on the sidewalk at the time.
