Why does it matter?
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the planned 100,000 square metres park will expand the port’s handling capacity by 300,000 TEUs, as well as support the in-land freight transport operations between Saudi Arabia’s central and eastern regions and the rest of the kingdom.
“The latest deal runs parallel with the goals of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy to position Saudi Arabia as a global logistics hub connecting three major continents besides fitting perfectly with Mawani’s pivotal role in building a booming and sustainable maritime sector,” the statement read, highlighting that the project will further expand the kingdom’s portfolio of logistics parks and re-export centres to 30, in total.
Strategic partnerships
According to SPA, Mawani’s strategic partnerships established over the past two years with key local and international corporations to build six logistics parks are set to create over 6,000 job opportunities.
