In a development for Qatar’s transportation sector, Mowasalat (Karwa) has partnered with Chinese vehicle manufacturer Yutong to test an autonomous electric bus (e-bus) at Lusail Bus Depot. This trial, overseen by Qatar’s Ministry of Transport (MOT), is a significant step in the nation’s shift towards an electric transit system and implementing the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy.

This strategy, started by the MOT in September, focuses on embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative technologies to revolutionise the transportation industry.

In alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE), the strategy underscores the commitment to smart, eco-friendly transportation solutions.

These efforts aim to reduce energy consumption, emissions, and traffic accidents while enhancing overall quality of life.

Future of sustainable transport

The autonomous e-bus runs on clean electric energy, offering zero emissions.

Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, high-definition cameras, and radar systems, it sets new benchmarks in safety and sustainability.

Mesned Al Misned, Project Manager of Public Transport Affairs at MOT, highlighted this trial as a continuation of the 2022 successful test of an autonomous electric minibus at Qatar Foundation’s Campus.

He stated, “This initiative aligns perfectly with the goals of the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy, leveraging advanced technology to modernise our public transit systems.”

Evolution for Qatar

The MOT is looking to transform Qatar’s transportation and mobility system, supporting various economic and service sectors and ensuring a sustainable future for the country.

Ahmad Hassan Al Obaidly, COO of Mowasalat (Karwa), emphasised the broader implications of this successful operation.

He said, “This isn’t just a technological milestone; it’s a testament to our dedication to environmental sustainability and innovative solutions in transportation. Integrating autonomous technology with zero-emission vehicles is a game-changer, aligning with Qatar’s environmental goals and enhancing community life.”

Mowasalat (Karwa) continues to drive Qatar’s transport transformation, providing sustainable, efficient, and advanced solutions for the public, schools, and corporations. The company is vertically integrated and maintains and operates its fleet of vehicles and in-house maintenance and refuelling capabilities.
