The Middle East’s longest traffic tunnel, designed to reduce traffic congestion in Abu Dhabi, could be inaugurated in the first quarter of 2012 reports Emirates 24/7.
The US$1.3 billion project is 88 per cent complete, with part of the street to be opened to the public at the Tourist Club, Najda and Hamdan street areas soon.
Speaking on the benefits the tunnel will bring commuters and logistics firms, Jumma Al Junaibi, the Municipality’s director general pointed out the tunnel is an investment in the future.
“The project is vital for the Capital’s development plans in the long term as it is intended to cope with the expected large increase in the population and traffic,” he said.
The 8 lane, three kilometre long tunnel is expected to handle a capacity of more than 8000 vehicles at a time.
