UAE road deaths drop 21% in H1 2010

The number of people killed in accidents on the UAE’s roads declined by 21 percent in the first half of 2010, it was reported on Sunday.

A police report showed that the number of people killed in road accidents in the emirates during the first six months of this year was 391, compared to 495 in the same period in 2009, according to a report by the Al Khaleej newspaper.

The report also found that the number of accidents and injuries also declined this year.

The total number of accidents dropped 25.5 percent to 3,773, while the number of injuries sustained on the emirate’s roads dropped 27 percent to 4,373 between January and June 2010.

The police report, compiled by the Traffic Coordination Department at the Interior Ministry, also found that the number of road mishaps declined 23.5 percent to 2,544. Increased police patrols and stiffer penalties are what have led to the drop in deaths, injuries, accidents and mishaps, the report claimed.
