Doha Metro stations will be better connected to nearby developments than Dubai Metro, Qatar Rail chief technical officer has claimed.

Daniel Leckel said several Dubai Metro stations were located too far away from commuters' intended destinations.

“A big problem in Dubai is the connection of the metro to [nearby] developments,” Leckel said during a presentation at Cityscape Qatar on Tuesday.

“It's very difficult to come from the Dubai Metro to a nearby mall or something because the stations are too remote.”

Metro users have to walk about 1 kilometre along an enclosed walkway from the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station to the entrance of the mall – and another 1 kilometre to the base of the world's tallest tower.

Leckel said Qatar Rail met with stakeholders such as developers on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to ensure stations were conveniently located.

“This is the biggest difference to Dubai,” he said.

In cases where that was not possible, Leckel said air-conditioned walkways and travellators would be installed.

West Bay Central station would be several hundred metres from the closest office buildings. Leckel said a hop-on-hop-off bus would be provided.

Doha Metro is expected to take 500,000 cars off the road each day when it is fully operational, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and also reducing the city's significant traffic bottle necks.

The four-line metro is expected to operate its first passenger service in 2019 and eventually link up to a planned heavy rail network.
