Joint venture QDVC-Bin Omran has been awarded a $1.16bn design and construction road contract by Qatar’s public works authority, Ashghal.

The contract is for the Orbital Highway and Truck Route, which is part of the Salwa Road to North Relief Road project.

The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route is one of the largest projects being delivered through Ashghal’s Expressway Programme linking Mesaieed area to Al Khor and Ras Laffan Industrial City.

QDVC-Bin Omran’s section of the work will include five lanes and two separated truck lanes in each direction with the provision of two future lanes.

Major infrastructure improvements will be implemented as part of the project, including a storm water drainage network, treated sewage effluent networks, electrical and telecommunication networks, street lighting and substations.

The project is estimated to commence by Q2 2014 and be completed by Q2 2017.

It is the latest of a raft of road contracts awarded by Ashghal. Earlier in March, Larsen & Toubro announced it had won a $600mn contract for the design and construction of the Al Wakrah Bypass Road in Doha.

A joint venture between Habtoor Leighton Group and Al Jaber Engineering has been awarded a $1.7bn (QR6.15bn) contract for the design and construction of the New Orbital Highway.
