Etihad's SMS tracking service goes global
Etihad Crystal Cargo is to offer customers the option to track the status of their freight shipments worldwide via SMS.
Under the latest service, customers will be given a specified telephone number, which they can text in order to receive real time information regarding consignments. The move is an extension of the Abu Dhabi carrier's initial tracking service first introduced within the UAE in 2006.
"The introduction of SMS tracking technology is another important step for Etihad Crystal Cargo which will bring important information to the fingertips of our customers," said Des Vertannes, executive vice president, cargo, Etihad Airways.
The tracking service is supported by an online tracking system, which can be accessed via the company's website. Users will be charged standard text message prices and can also track multiple shipments at a time in a single SMS message.
Using an SMS gateway solution for two way transmission supplied by Ontrack Systems, the technology is linked to the carrier's IT platform, CRISTAL (Cargo Reservations Information Sales Tracking Accounting and Logistics). In addition to tracking, the system is able to analyse incoming SMS data and create management information system reports, enabling Etihad to send generic information such as new routes and services to the customer.
"It is vital for our customers to know at any time exactly where in the world their shipment is located. Furthermore, by tracking their shipment so precisely our customers will be able to improve the efficiency of their own businesses," added Vertannes.
