France ATC strike expected to end today
A three day strike by air traffic controllers in France is expected to end today, AP has reported. The strike has caused more than 2000 flights into the country to be cancelled so far.
The striking ATCs are protesting against a plan by the EU to consolidate European airspace under one authority. In addition, the plan proposes that air traffic control duties be opened to private enterprises.
The union for air traffic controllers believes the plan will result in a loss of jobs and a decrease in passenger safety.
About 27,000 flights a day cross European airspace, and most are flying under air traffic management systems designed in the 1950s, AP reported quoting the European Commission.
Meanwhile, a warning was issued to France-bound travellers to delay all flight plans until Friday.
