Interview: Mustapha Kawam, Globe Express Services
Mustapha Kawam is the managing director, gulf states for Globe Express Services (GES). Under his leadership, GES recently received a Platinum Award from Maersk Line Shipping, the world’s largest ocean carrier, and the Certificate of Approval by the Bureau of Assessment Services.
What were some of the highlights for your firm in 2012?
In 2012, Globe Express Services continued its steady global expansion in terms of geographic network and logistics resources. In April, we completed a joint venture (JV) with ITSA, a leading international air and ocean freight forwarder based in Italy, expanding our market presence and service capabilities in Europe. In June, we added two fully-licensed corporate offices in Bangladesh – in Dhaka, the country’s capital, as well as Chittagong, its second largest city, busiest seaport and business capital – expanding our office network to 58 corporate locations worldwide.
In the Middle East region, we successfully completed a Dh35 million development project to open an industrial warehouse and accompanying office in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone, expanding our supply chain solutions in the UAE in terms of warehousing and packing services, speciality handling and lifecycle management. In Saudi Arabia (KSA), we opened a new Dammam Terminal Yard, a 23,000m2 facility that includes an open storage area, warehouses, and office buildings that will house the Dammam Branch management and the Transportation Division.
Finally, in December of 2012, Michael C. Hughes, formerly with KPMG and The Coca Cola Company, was appointed as GES president, chief executive officer, and a member of our Board of Directors. Under his leadership, Mr. Hughes plans to optimise the company’s core business with the goal of transforming GES into a global logistics leader with a winning corporate culture.
What can we expect from Ges in 2013?
In 2013, GES will focus on strengthening our core service offerings, expanding our partnerships with existing customers and key vendor partners, developing new industry verticals, and evolving our technology platform.
What is the Unique Selling point of GES?
GES offers a unique blend of size and scope with an incomparable level of flexibility. Rather than asking our customers to alter their processes and procedures to fit our system, we have made it a practice to tailor our services – from operating procedures to systems – to fit the needs of our customers. In fact, our clients are accustomed to quick results and very little bureaucracy, attributable to the active involvement of our ownership team and the impressive commitment level of our employees.
Is there anything else that you would like to add about GES?
At GES, a genuine commitment to quality, excellence and exceeding customer expectations is deep-rooted across the organisation. This is underlined by the several industry awards and recognitions that we have been consistently getting in recent times.
