QRail set to award tenders for Doha Metro
Qatar Railways Company (QRail) said on Monday it will award a number of tenders for the Doha Metro, adding that initial works has started on the transport mega project.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Construction Leaders Forum in Doha, QRail's chief programme officer Ghanim Hassan Al Ibrahim said a tender to appoint a logistics coordinator would be awarded by the end of 2012.
QRail will also award tenders for underground lines and major stations in the first quarter of 2013 and for elevated lines in the third quarter of next year, he added in comments published by Qatar News Agency.
Al Ibrahim told the forum that Qatar's four environment-friendly railway projects "will offer an efficient, world-class public transport system within Qatar and links to rest of the GCC nations".
The four projects - Doha Metro, Lusail City light rail transit network, the West Bay transit system and the GCC rail network - are scheduled for completion starting 2016 to full operations of the network in 2019, he said.
Lusail City LRT, comprising 36 stations over 38.8km, will be the first project to be completed in 2016 and will cost QR10bn, he added.
"This will be the first achievement of QRail in 2016," said Al Ibrahim, adding: "We have already finished most of the excavation and tunneling work is done. Now under stations are being constructed and we are finalising all systems processes and suppliers."
Innovation was a pre-requisite, the QRail official said. "We encouraged all contract bidders to innovate and bring new ideas to execute the projects efficiently."
