Under the Royal Directive of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ) in Muscat will be converted from a commercial port to a full tourist port.

As a result, all commercial import, export, general cargo and container activities will be shifted to Port of Sohar In the north of Oman.

It is expected Port of Sohar will show its biggest growth in its existence this year, with the throughput for dry bulk and liquids to grow to 18.5 million FRT, which is an increase of more than 60 per cent compared to last year.

Closing the commercial activities of the port in Muscat means the Port of Sohar will receive an extra volume of 350,000 TEU containers, increasing the total volume to 500,000 TEU containers by the end of 2013.

It is anticipated that the decision to shift operations to Port of Sohar will strengthen Oman’s efforts to diversify its economical drivers away from the oil and gas industry.
