Hong Kong International has been named best airport in the world at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2011.

Shanghai Hongqiao was named most improved airport.

The Skytrax awards are followed closely by the world’s airport and airlines, as they are based on independent customer surveys.

The 2011 awards were based on 11.38 million survey questionnaires completed by over 100 nationalities of airport customer, covering more than 240 airports worldwide.

“We pay very close attention to the travel trends of all passengers that participate in the Survey, and it was through their feedback in 2009/2010 that we saw a need to develop the survey topics, specifically with the inclusion of the Best Regional Airports category,” said Edward Plaisted at Skytrax.

“Alongside this, the introduction of the Best Airport Hotel section has been an astonishing success, and a factor behind the increase of more than 1.5 million extra survey participants.”

Regal Airport Hotel, Hong Kong was named best airport hotel in the world.
