The sight of a passenger walking through the aisles of a plane to stretch their legs is a common occurrence.

However, travellers received a shock on a recent Southwest Airlines flight from San Francisco to San Diego, when a South American Magellan Penguin made a special appearance and waddled through the aircraft.

The animal, named Pete the Penguin, was making his way home to San Diego after appearing at a national science convention.

He was given permission to stretch his legs during the 90-minute flight, while his keepers were also given the thumbs-up to explain the situation to passengers over the in-flight intercom.

Clips of his antics have begun to appear on YouTube.
