Canadians will have to pay C $250 (AED 918.5) for a standard 30 day UAE visit visa from January.

A three-month visa will cost C $500 (AED 1837) and a multiple-entry visa, valid for six months with a maximum of 14 days per visit, will cost C $1000 (AED 3673).

The changes follow a recent dispute over Canada’s refusal to give more landing slots to UAE airlines.

The UAE is currently allowed six weekly landing slots in Canada.

Etihad and Emirates see the country as a potentially lucrative source of long haul passengers who, if given the option, would fly through the UAE to destinations in Asia.

Canadians on long haul trips currently tend to transit through European airports, particularly Frankfurt.

Under the new rules, Canadians will also have to apply for a visa at least 15 days before they travel.

The fees must be paid up front and are non-refundable if an application is rejected.
