A frustrated flight attendant has been arrested in the United States, after shocking passengers with his explicit resignation on the public address system, followed by a dramatic exit on the emergency slide.

The incident was sparked by a heated exchange of words between JetBlue employee Steven Slater and a passenger, who apparently knocked the 39-year-old flight attendant while removing his luggage from an overhead locker.

In response, Slater stormed to the front of the plane and used the public address system to announce his immediate retirement. He then grabbed a beer from the galley, activated the jet's emergency slide, slid down and headed for his car.

“To the passenger who called me a mother-f***er, f*** you. I’ve been in this business 28 years. And that’s it, I’m done,” Slater was quoted as saying by Philip Catelinet, another passenger on the flight.

He was arrested by New York Port Authority officials at his beachfront Belle Harbor home a few hours later, according to the Daily Mail.

Slater had been with JetBlue since 2008. He was the chairman of the airline’s Uniform Redesign Committee and a member of the Inflight Values Committee, reported the newspaper.

Jet Blue has since confirmed its cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
