Al Madina unveils masterplan for Barka facility
Oman-based 3PL Al Madina Logistic Services (AMLS) has announced its plans for a 30,000 square-metre distribution centre in the city of Barka, just west of Muscat.
‘’It is a state-of-the-art facility that currently does not exist in the region and we are bullish that it will be an icon once completed by last-quarter 2010,” said AMLS senior manager for supply chain Sanjeeve S Thavarajah.
“During the design stage we worked with a world-leading solution provider using simulation tools to ensure the facility delivers our objectives and the application of Six Sigma tools further enabled us to achieve best design at best cost,” Thavarajah added.
AMLS is incorporating a number of storage and handling methodologies, such as conventional selective pallet racking, carton-live-storage, narrow aisles, automated/storage and a retrieval system that has the capability to put-away and retrieve an average of 80 pallets an hour.
On completion, the centre will have 65,218 pallet positions, and will be networked with almost three kilometres of powered and gravity conveyors to reduce manual labour dependency on-site.
"The proposed facility will be built according to world-class standards where special attention is being put to the flooring specifications, type of paints (food grade), application of fully electric (dry cell) material handling equipment, pharmaceutical heating ventilation and air-conditioning standards, among other issues,” said AMLS CEO Mahmood Sakhi Al Balushi.
