A major landmark in the transition of the US$500 million Bahrain Gateway into an Upper Gulf shipping hub was achieved today when the first shipping line called into the port.

The 2500-TEU APL Dalian visited the Khalifa Bin Salman Port as part of APL’s SRX service, which covers the line’s Indian Subcontinent, Lower Red Sea and Arabian Gulf ports liner service.

The port opened for operations on 1st April and has been taking in empty containers and booking export containers since that time.

“We have been looking forward to this moment – we’ve spent the last year reviewing processes, simulating operations and training,” said Scott Kelley, head of operations at APM Terminals Bahrain, the Bahrain Gateway operator.

“We believe our team of professionals, world-class equipment and technology gives our customers a competitive edge as the best port in the region,” Kelley added.
