COMMENT: The importance of telematics for fleet operators

According to the global status report on road safety published by the World Health Organizations in 2015, 1.25 million road fatalities are occurring every year. It is imperative that we employ technologies and change our behaviour on the road to reduce the dangers associated. Telematics is one of those technologies that can positively contribute to the cause. Fleet managers can employ this technology to monitor their fleets in a transparent way in real time, which allows them to better evaluate situations and make better decisions. So what is telematics?
Telematics is a solution that designates a wide range of hardware communicating among each other and transmitting data. This combination of hardware and software technologies is designed to measure and record engine performance, odometer readings, fuel gage readings, as well as all outputs of a vehicle’s engine. This data is then sent across CDMA/GSM/Satellite networks to a host server or cloud for analysis, reporting and other uses. Telematics devices differ in accuracy of the measuring signal as well as other specifications such as voltage levels, frequency range, digital and analogue inputs and required calibrations.
Telematics operates in a simple way, the hardware (similar to a black box) which is often equipped with a GPS and a 3G card is installed in a vehicle. It is then connected to sensors that will be collecting data such as: engine RPM, temperature, harsh breaking, over speeding, location, driving time as well as vehicle load. This data is then compiled and presented to the fleet manager in real time, which allows fleet managers to monitor their fleets, analyse the data and take action if needed. Some advanced systems have the ability to analyse this data with more than 65 parameters, and help fleet managers plan journeys ahead and manage their drivers. All these metrics have a very big influence on the performance of the fleet and contribute positively on the manager’s decision. By getting all those data analysed by a software the road safety manager or fleet operator can predict risk, avoid accident and act as a real manager with his drivers!
Modern telematics solutions and IoT technologies help organizations in elevating their control and improving safety standards. Some of the benefits include the reduction of accidents, better adherence to company safety policies and compliance to speed limits set by the government, and decreasing petrol consumption. The simple act of capturing data is not enough. What will make a real impact is detailed analysis of captured information and managerial decisions on incorporating appropriate changes.
