At a seminar to discuss how new technology is being used to drive efficiency in fleets in the region, the importance of lowering fuel consumption was addressed.
At the Supply Chain Fleet Seminar hosted by Restrata on Monday 1st May 2017 at the Movenpick Hotel JLT, Dubai, Martin Roberts, transport operations manager at Momentum Logistics explained, “Rising fuel costs and issues around fuel theft have brought the need to lower fuel consumption into the spotlight.”
Traditionally in a region where the cost of fuel is much lower than in the likes of Europe or the USA, there has been a tendency ‘not to worry’ about fuel consumption, but it is an important consideration in the breakdown of the job price, especially in an increasingly competitive market.”
Diesel Fuel prices are in fact on the rise in the UAE, increasing from 1.6 dhs per litre in May 2016 to 1.97 dhs per litre in May 2017.
Vehicle telematics have long been utilized in the battle to reduce fleet costs whilst improving driver safety and lowering CO2 emissions. This approach has historically produced significant return on investment, through reduction in fuel consumption and the maintenance of vehicles.
The need to improve safety on the regions roads is also a top priority. David Nicholls, vice president of situational awareness and tracking at Restrata, told attendees “In 2016 the number of deaths on UAE roads rose from 675 in 2015 to 725, representing 5.5 deaths per every 100,000 people. The Government aims to reduce this to 3 by 2021.”
“Connecting your fleet and utilizing data to drive significant change in driver behaviour not only has the power to save lives, but also make an impact on the business bottom line, contributing to savings on fuel and less wear and tear, creating an overall more efficient and cost effective fleet,” he added.
