Eldery woman arrested in Dubai psychotropic drugs bust
A 65-year-old Pakistani woman was caught by customs officers at the Dubai International Airport trying to smuggle 13,180 mind-altering (psychotropic) pills into the country.
The arrest was made on November 9, 2015 and the woman appeared before the Court of First Instance on Thursday.
A female inspection officer told the court that the contents of the defendant’s bags appeared suspicious as they contained a large quantity of medicines.
"She was on a tourist visa and when we asked her whether she had anything to declare she replied negatively," the officer said.
A closer inspection revealed 8,380 pills in one bag, while some 4,800 pills were wrapped carefully with black tape and kept in another bag.
During interrogation, the woman claimed that a man in Pakistan gave her one bag and told her to hand it over to someone at a hotel in Naif in return for 20,000 Pakistani Rupees for the job (which is around AED 700.
A verdict is expected on February 8.
