Emirates SkyCargo, the air freight unit of Emirates Airline, has announced significant gains in the volume of Cool Chain products shipped through its new exclusive freighter hub at Al Maktoum International-Dubai World Central (DWC).

The new facility, called SkyCentral, was opened earlier this year before DWC was re-branded as Dubai South and features 15,000 square metres of dedicated storage for temperature-sensitive goods. This week it shipped its 35,000th tonne of Cool Chain cargo.

The facility encompasses a range of services provided by Emirates SkyCargo intended to protect refrigerated cargo.

The Emirates SkyCargo White Cover is a protective skin that shields the cargo to keep it cold; and the Emirates SkyCargo Cool Dolly, is a piece of equipment that transports cargo from the aircraft to cool storage areas, while maintaining temperatures of as a low as -20°C.

Emirates SkyCargo says the types of products shipped through SkyCentral’s Cool Chain facilities vary, but the most common are pharmaceuticals, fresh fruits and vegetables and increasingly, seafood.

Emirates SkyCargo has shipped almost 6,000 tonnes of sustainably-sourced seafood through SkyCentral since it opened.
