The National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) has announced it is ordering five additional VLCC newbuildings from South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, exercising an option contained within a contract for five new VLCCs signed in May.

Bahri ordered five VLCCs plus five options at the South Korean yard in May and latest move sees the Saudi Arabian shipowner, one of the largest tanker owners in the region, bringing its firm orders to ten 300,000 dwt tankers.

The additional oil tankers are due to be delivered through 2017 and 2018 and financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

“The signing of these contracts is for continuous renewal of the current fleet to meet the needs of the local and global markets,” Bahri said.

The 10 new vessels will bring Bahri’s VLCC fleet to 41.
