INTERVIEW: Abhishek Ajay Shah, RSA Logistics
Abhishek Ajay Shah is director of operations at RSA Logistics and a member of the board of directors at RSA TALKE.
How did you first become involved in logistics?
Coming from a family with an entrepreneurial background, the ambition on a personal note was always to do something in business that drove ambition and innovation. After my MEng in Civil Engineering with Business Management from Warwick University, in the UK, I was interested in the supply chain management aspect and decided to travel to Singapore and learn from some of the industries very best. After a short stint there, the hunger grew to come back to Dubai and start up, and develop, a company that believed in operational excellence and was customer focused. The aspect of the supply chain that interested me the most was asset-based logistics services, as this was something tangible and something that could be physically improved upon, leading to the birth of RSA Logistics.
What do you like most about your job and what is your favourite aspect of working in the logistics industry?
Being at the helm of a company from the get-go means you really do get to appreciate every facet of the organisation. I started from the ground-up, which involved physically receiving cargo to data entry and simultaneously developing relationships while progressing the business, giving me a great overall perspective. The most interesting element for me is the diverse needs and requirements of each and every customer coupled with the never-ending need for tailor-made solutions.
Looking back at 2014, what were the highs for RSA logistics?
This year RSA saw its next big step of expansion come to fruition: the opening our temperature controlled, chemical and open yard facilities. In addition, the challenge is always to find customers who are sustainable and would like to grow with you in the long run, and we believe we have done so. And we have not stopped there; there have been major IT upgrades and continuous focus on our customer service levels. All in all, 2014 has continued to set the standard for RSA and we cannot wait to continue our growth.
What do you think will be making headlines next year?
Looking forward to 2015, we expect bigger and better things, based on some key projects under the Dubai Government that will come to operation or begin development. Some examples are the completion of the expansion of DP World’s Jebel Ali Terminal 3, the continuing development of the Etihad Rail project and projects starting to break ground for Dubai Expo 2020 Furthermore the boost for the chemical industry with the production uptake that is scheduled to come out of KSA will surely be a boost to the whole region.
