Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is teaming up with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) to trial buses that run on electricity supplied by rechargeable batteries.

The buses will be able to cover up to 200km at a speed of 100km per hour and, once flat, the battery will take about 30 minutes to be recharged to 80 percent.

Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the RTA , said: "This step is aimed at fostering a green economy in the UAE in view of the importance of power for humans and various ingredients of development projects. "

In the pilot operation, the RTA will assess the environmental benefits by measuring the rate of reduced carbon emissions.

It will also identify the distance covered by the bus following each battery recharge process in addition to other parameters such as the bus speed, prescribed battery life span, ability to cope with the UAE's climate, engine efficiency and maintenance costs.
