Emirates SkyCargo opts for Unitechnik ULD handler

Emirates SkyCargo has revealed that it will use the Unitechnik X-Mover to support its operations at the UAE’s Al Maktoum International Airport.
The X-Mover allows users to store, retrieve and transport unit load devices (ULDs) without the need for multiple pieces of equipment.
The electronic all-wheel steering vehicle is able to perform 360° turns and offers handling heights ranging from 0.19m to 7m.
The Dubai-based cargo airline will use the X-Mover within its air freight centre at Al Maktoum International’s refrigerated high-bay racking warehouse. The unit will operate as both an elevating transfer vehicle (ETV) and a manoeuvrable transport system.
ULDs that arrive at the terminal will be initially transferred to a roller conveyor. The X-Mover will then pick up the load carriers and store them in the high-bay storage racks.
The system has its own powered roller conveyor, as well as friction wheels. Unlike conventional cargo-handling units, the Unitechnik machine has the ability to leave its aisle at any time.
In addition to transferring load carriers to slave pallets and roller conveyors, the airline will have the option to use its X-Mover as a truck or dolly dock for the loading and unloading of trucks and trailers.
Emirates SkyCargo is also in the process of installing Siemens Logistics and Airport Solutions, which will work in conjunction with the Unitechnik unit as master integrator the firm’s air freight centre.
